Tom Cruise and Gene Barry aren't the only ones to save Earth from a Martian invasion--from 1988 to 1990, an intrepid band of scientists and soldiers battled the Red Planet menace on the small screen in the action-packed syndicated television series War of the Worlds. The show operated on an intriguing premise that paid homage to George Pal's classic 1953 film version--the Martians, presumed dead at the end of the movie, are actually in a state of hibernation, and 30 years later, they have not only revived, but begun to inhabit human bodies in a second attempt to conquer our planet. Now, a team of scientists (led by dependable character actor Jared Martin) and soldiers (under the command of actor-playwright Richard Chaves) must convince humanity to fight against an alien onslaught. It's unfortunate that War of the Worlds caught on with only a small but loyal audience (the series lasted just two seasons), since its episodes delivered an entertaining mix of science fiction, action, and suspense; highlights from the first season include "Thy Kingdom Come," which introduces a supporting turn by Ann Robinson, who recreates her role from the 1953 film; "Eye for an Eye," which wryly revisits the famous 1938 radio broadcast of War of the Worlds by Orson Welles that spread real panic over much of the Eastern seaboard; and the disturbing "Unto Us a Child Is Born," in which the human team and the aliens search for a half-Earthling, half-Martian baby. All 22 episodes of the debut season are included on this six-disc set; unfortunately for diehard fans, no supplemental features are included. --Paul Gaita

Season one of this excellent TV show was released as a promotional tie-in to Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Since no big tie-in is likely to exist for War of the Worlds the series in the future, it is very unlikely that seasons two and three will ever be released on DVD. This is too bad. You can't just release season one of a show!! Come on!!!!
By the way, I have a question: What the *&^% happened to TV? Picture this, dear reader. Once upon a time, the following shows were on television DURING THE SAME TIME PERIOD!!!!: The New Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Romero's brilliant Tales from the Darkside, Friday the 13 the TV series, Freddy's Nightmares, War of the Worlds, The ingenious 80s revival of The Twilight Zone (of which, Harlan Ellison was the creative consultant and Wes Craven the most common director), Monsters and Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories. Saturday morning cartoons featured shows like Thundercats, The Real Ghostbusters, Gummi Bears, Muppet Babies, as well as reruns of shows like Thundar the Barbarian and Johnny Quest. Now people fawn over prurient tripe like Paris Hilton's BFF, and kids watch trash like Bratz. Again, what happened to TV? There are obvious culprits of course: MTV, reality TV, etc. It is tragic though. By the way, where the hell is Tales from the Darkside on DVD?

became addicted to the series when it first came out and couldn't wait for the reruns. video taped many of them but lost them when i moved. please get moving on completion of the series on dvd. i have the original movie and season 1 but would like to complete the set. the war of the world series was one of the really good sci-fi series even though it left you hanging in many episodes to draw your own conclusions. can't wait to see it again and i'm sure i'm not the only one.

As of today (May 19, 2008) fans have been waiting 2 1/2 years for Paramount to release Season 2 of "WAR OF THE WORLDS" on DVD. Season 2 ran for 20 episodes and had a harder edge than the first season. New cast members included Adrian Paul (later the star of the long-running "Highlander" TV series) and Catherine Disher (who later co-starred on the popular "Forever Knight" TV series). Guest stars included Roy Thinnes ("The Invaders"), Jill Hennessy ("Crossing Jordan"), Colm Feore ("Stephen King's Storm of the Century") Pat Mastroianni ("Degrassi High"), plus recurring guest star Rachel Blanchard (star of TV's "Clueless"). I encourage EVERYONE who reads this message to PLEASE send a snail-mail letter AND an e-mail to Paramount and request that Season 2 of "WAR OF THE WORLDS" be released on DVD. I remember first watching this series as a kid when it first aired in 1988; 20 years later, the 1st season is still pretty entertaining to watch despite some bad acting and dialogue (though still far superior to the awful 2nd season). Having just sat through the episode with the alien baby ("Unto Us a Child is Born"), it still amazes me that the explicit gore from that one episode made it past the censors for regular TV airing back in the '80s.

While I haven't had the chance to watch the entire series. I was so excited to see it released on DVD after the horrible experience of the recent movie remake, I shutter just thinking of it! This show was ahead of it's time and cancelled far too soon.
